Take it slow to start.

Downhill mountain biking is exciting but can also take time to master. We suggest taking it easy on your first few runs. A great trail to start with is Itsy-Bitsy. If you are riding a trail for the first time, ride it slowly a few times to familiarize yourself with its features. Some riders will even walk certain sections to make sure they see exactly what the trail is before riding it. That is okay!! Make sure to watch for other riders while doing this. Once you’re comfortable, you can push yourself to the next level.

After you familiarize yourself multiple times and gain the confidence needed to tackle a trail, then you are ready to tackle it at your full speed. For more safety at our bike park, we recommend taking a peak at our policies.

Plan out your runs.

Enjoy yourself and stay within your limits by planning your runs using our trail map. Trails range from beginner green runs to intermediate blue runs, followed by advanced black diamonds and double black diamonds. Start with the green runs and progress to more challenging trails as you build confidence. Remember to take it slow at first and familiarize yourself with each trails features before riding it at full speed.

Gravity-Fueled Excitement Pre-Arrival Checklist: Prepare to replenish

Prepare to replenish.

Mountain biking is an active sport, and it’s essential to come prepared to replenish your body. Ensure you bring enough water and food to keep you energized throughout the day. If you happen to forget, don’t worry! Our Thunderbird Lodge, just a few hundred feet down the road, has plenty of snacks and drinks to purchase. A helpful tip is to check the weather at Spider Mountain to see what conditions will be like during your visit.

If it is going to be hot during your riding time, we recommend looking at our cool down guide here. This guide will help you to stay cool and enjoy your time at Spider Mountain more.

Fill your downtime from biking!

Just a bike ride’s distance away from the Spider Mountain base area is Thunderbird Lodge alongside Lake Buchanan.
